bomb squad experts taking apart the booby traps apartment of the colorado mass shooting suspect. hello everybody, i'm bruce johnson, thank you for joining us. led by police robot authorities got past the first explosive device in the apartment of the colorado shooting suspect. police say the major threat has been eliminated but other threats remain inside the apartment of james holmes. he's suspected of killing 12 people and wounding 58? yesterday's rampage. we have team coverage tonight and let's begin with teresa garcia in aurora.

[ no audio ] >> reporter: the movie theater here in aurora remaybes closed until at least next wednesday but across town a much more active scene with the bomb experts making entry into the suspect's apartment and police are telling us it could take another 12 to 24 hours until they can safely clear out the dangerous materials. a controlled explosion went off inside the booby trapped apartment of accused movie theater gunman james holmes. flush the blast was designed to help law enforcement get inside the apartment which they say contained a complicated array of explosive devices trigger wires, chemicals and ammunition. >> the threat has not been completely eliminated. it has been significantly reduced. >> reporter: holmes is in custody awaiting his first court appearance monday morning. the 24-year-old former grad student is accused of the early friday morning massacre of movie goers watching the

midnight showing of the new "batman" film. holmes has an attorney and so far not talking to police but just a day before the shooting neighbors say he did make an impression on them. carl allen spoke with holmes on wednesday. >> he stood here and talked to us for a minute. hep didn't say much and -- he didn't say much and just had a little weird look in his eye. >> reporter: movie goer alex sullivan was celebrating his 27th birthday. tomorrow would have been the first wedding anniversary. annie dalton is mourning her 6- year-old great niece veronica poser. her mother is still in the hospital. >> her whole life has changed in a flash for what? you know. i mean, she still doesn't know her daughter is gone. >> reporter: and only one person knows why. well, police are not discussing a possible motive. everyone in this community continues to speculate. now those who had met james

holmes say he appeared to be a well spoken clean cut quiet person. a community vigil for the victims is planned for later this evening. live in aurora, colorado, teresa garcia, back to you. >> teresa, bruce johnson in washington. just couple of thinks, what do authorities -- questions, what do authorities hope to find in his apartment? >> reporter: bruce, through the cameras and the robot they sent in, they do know there are rounds of ammo, or buckets of it for that matter. there are several five gallon cannisters or tubs of liquid. not sure and you know that robot actually first made entry earlier today. kind of getting rid of those trip wires that was the first stage into getting there. they've also found some what appeared to be like mortar shells and also commercial grade explosives. clearly they could find plenty more. >> not much of a cyber history. i would imagine they want go e to get hair hands -- to get their hands on his computers

though? >> reporter: whether it be from social media you know. they haven't seen too much in the sense of a twitter or facebook page but also what websites has he visited. a lot of the ammo he bought up to 6,000 rounds he eventually acquired and much of that was purchased on the internet. the guns, the four guns he did acquire those in colorado stores. but what he was searching, how well maybe he learned his bomb and making background. that is still to be determined. >> teresa just one more question. you talk about motive. you know a lot of people have already concluded that this is the man, this is the guy who did it. motive won't be that important. he simply deranged. what might sufficient fite out there in terms -- suffice out there in terms of what people need to hear in terms of the possible motive? >> reporter: right, it's hard to make sense of something that's so senseless but there has to be a reason at least within that person as to why this happened. a lot of times people say it was a problem he had in school or other areas in his life but we'll soon find that out bruce.

>> teresa, thanks a lot. authorities have not released the names of those killed in the colorado theater shootings but relatives and others have identified seven thus far. you've heard some of this. among the latest 29-year-old air force reservist. the air force has staff sergeant jesse childress was a cyber systems operator at buckley air force base. some of the survivors are now talking about the ordeal. steven barton recoupabled his chilling experience as -- recounted his chilling experience from a hospital bed with a breathing tube still in. >> it was cold and calculated definitely. it seemed very methodical just the rate at which he was firing and how he wasn't really moving position. he was just like unloading into the crowd. it seemed to me to be very purposeful and methodical like he -- i don't remember between the time that i saw the

shooting start and when i fell to the ground. he didn't move at all. he was just shooting from the same position. and then once i got up to leave i did not look to other way. -- the other way. >> doctors say many of the shooting victims now face a very long recovery and some of the injuries may be lifelong. all of the evidence gathered from holmes' apartment is headed our way to the fbi lab at quantico, virginia. the fbi has already sent teams of experts from quantico to colorado to help local authorities there. >> last night, the t local, state and federal resources here in colorado were joined by the fbi's national assets from quantico, virginia. these additional assets are a part of the fbi's critical incident response group in our laboratory division. they include on scene expertise including explosive sampling and chemists and device examiners. senior scientists from the fbi. post flask recovery experts.

explosive operations specialists also known as bomb techs. and their purpose is to support the safe operations and preserve the evidence inside the apartment. >> the fbi says holmes' apartment was a quote an extremely dangerous environment and that if a neighbor or delivery man had gone into that apartment, they would likely have been severely injured or even killed. well, the movie massacre is having a ripple effect across the world with scaled back premieres and banning costumes at some theaters. we can't forget about our children who are also watching these events unfold. surae chinn has that part of the story tonight. >> reporter: it can be confusing to children. experts say this is the time to talk to your kids. what you say though can depend on their age. but it is apparent that children are reacting to this senseless act. >> it was kind of heart breaking to see that so many families lost their loved ones.

>> reporter: 12-year-old dario along with mom all came to see the new "batman" movie. >> i was kind of afraid there was going to be another shooting but i felt kind of safe that they were taking precautions to keep movie theaters safer. >> this is pretty much like being struck byline. bad things -- by lightning. bad things happen to you. >> reporter: professor william lawson is the chairman of the sigh chi industry department after the university. >> this is an excellent opportunity for parents to dialogue and help kids understand that we will try to protect them and take care of them. you definitely have to talk to your kids about it. >> reporter: dominic romaine had a conversation with his 9- year-old son before coming to see the movie in silver spring. >> he was just wanting to know why it happened. more so than how it happened. he was just like why would someone do this? >> sometimes people do things because they for whatever they're evil. we can also say that sometimes people do it because they have mental problems and that sometimes people do things that

don't make sense to us. sometimes truly innocent victims. >> i knew it was going to be a little harder you know. you know it's going to be kind of like you know the mow haves are going to bring bad thoughts and stuff but still i feel like we shouldn't let this really get to our heads that much. and we should you know just enjoy the movie. >> reporter: some experts say with children ages 4 to 6 parents can spend a few minutes reassuring they're okay. ages 7 to 12 they know something like can happen to them. well, you can talk about the facts and let it sink in. sometimes children may not and questions right away or they may bring it up days later i. with teenagers it could be more difficult but tell them it's okay to be up set and they are rare. i'm surae chinn for 9news now. stay right here for all the latest developments on the theater shooting. tonight at 11:00 and of course you can go to wusa9.com anytime for new information. just ahead on 9news now at 6:00. the world's largest aids conference is underway this

here's a story we're working only right now. families of inmates at the d.c. jail tell 9news now they're being charged to visit at the jail. specifically $9 to visit and chat with their incarcerated family members on camera. the teleconferences are recent. we don't know how the money is being used or what happens if a family can't pay. we haven't been able to reach a spokesperson for the corrections department and more on the the story. the world's largest conference on aids is underway in washington this weekend. some 30,000 people from nearly 200 countries are here to discuss living with hiv and aids. and also how to prevent it. and educate those who still don't know about it hiv and aids. at bell high school in northwest, organizers hosted a soccer game to attract and teach teens about aids. the latest report shows just under 3% of all d.c. residents over the age of 12 are now living with hiv or aids. another 5,000 could be infected

and simply not know it according to experts. in the u.s. young people between the ages of 15 and 24 account for a staggering 40% of all new aids cases. experts say educating teens is crucial. >> we're going to make an impact on this, it's the young youth and the youth of today that we've got to get the message out to around ending the epidemic. it's theirs to own and it's theirs to control and take care of. >> tonight the attention turns to the kennedy center at a gala bringing together businesses, public health organizations, and the arts with celebrities as bill gates and sharon stone and jesse norman. coverage of the event tonight on news news at 1 -- 9news now at 1:00. media mogul rupert murdoch resigned from a number of news corps boards in britain and the united states. he stepped down from the ni groups and news corporate ration. it's not clear so far which of news corporation's u.s. boards murdoch has left. coming up on 9news now,

i'm going to guess we needed this rain right? >> we did and this is the beneficial kind of rain. the first storm was fast and furious but over the last two days we've been getting the light gentle rain that has some time to soak into the soil. not getting too much of that overflow that we normally see with flash flooding or watches and warnings. so this is the good kind of rain and we're happy to have it. live doppler 9000 hd has been tracking light showers all afternoon. that should die down right around midnight but with all the moisture in the ground, it means we're going to be stuck with some patchy fog and you can see it here from the michael & son weather camera already some fog from the view here as we look into the -- i believe the camera is looking to the east at this point. 70 degrees at reagan national airport this hour and we're starting to back down just a little bit as the temperatures

are going to slide into the 60s for our overnight lows. but in all, it's going to be a fairly quiet night for us and yes, we're definitely happy to see that. the winds have been out of the northeast. that has been keeping us cool today. our north and northeast winds counter that with the cloud cover as well as the very light winds. and the highs at reagan national only made it to about 72. we normally see closer to 90- degrees this time of the year. so yes we're very much below average. current temperatures are looking pretty good. fairly comfortable in the 60s upper 60s for most at this hour and we will continue to see that patchy fog late night tonight and early hours for tomorrow. and yes there's the opportunity to see the warmer temperatures tomorrow as we start to shift our winds southerly. there will be an afternoon shower or thunderstorm on your sunday and keep that in mind in you're going out and about. as we head into the workweek back into the 90s. so now, let's take a look at how things are shaping one the futurecast -- up with the futurecast forecast model. the overnight showers are going to end and we'll have some partly to mostly cloudy skies

for you in the morning. and then an opportunity late in the day tomorrow to develop a few scattered showers and storms. they'll be hit and miss some of us will stay dry. and then we will see a little bit of clearing as we head into monday with some monday afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. likely. so let's get to that extended forecast for you. it looks like we are going to see tonight mostly cloudy and very cool as temperatures stay in the mid 60s to upper 60s near 70 degrees in town. the overnight lows are going to be fairly comfortable for us. but in all, that seven day forecast will feature some sort of a big event that as we head into the 90s as we get into the later portion of the week. okay. that's got two today right? >> two today and two big ones as bell. the braves are in one. you're starting to hear words like it's not time for the nats to panic. translace bruce it might be time for the nats to panic. a double loss for washington one on the field this afternoon. and maybe they've lost a player
